Well June has come and gone and like many summer months it was here and left before I knew it. June was filled with planning for my mom’s 60th belated birthday party and then recovering from it. I also was able to enjoy some great weather with friends and family. Below is some of what went down in June.
As I mentioned before, my mom’s family is Polish. This of course means whenever there is a family gathering there will be talking, laughing, drink, and food. And at those family gatherings it is an ABSOLUTE must that we have pierogies. Pierogies are a staple in Polish cuisine and can best be described as the Polish version of dumplings. They are made with noodle dough and can be stuffed with an assortment of lovely things…cheesy potatoes (my personal favorite), meat, sauerkraut, mushrooms, and fruit (tried it, didn’t really like it).
So my mom, myself, and two of her friends spent a couple of hours making over 200 of them in preparation for her party. It was a great time filled with laughter and food and margaritas! It reminded me that cooking with my mom will be one of the things I miss the most on my travels.
We celebrated my mom turning 60, belatedly, at a local brewery called Twisted Vine Brewery. We had family and friends come in from all places and ended up being an amazing time. It was a great time for us to catch up with people we hadn’t seen in awhile and drink and be merry. We continued the party back at my parents’ place for more fun. You can read all about it my post Fun-Filled Family Weekend.
Des Moines Arts Festival
During the month of June there is the lovely and amazing Des Moines Arts Festival. It is nationally known and hosts hundreds of artists each year ranging from photography to paintings to sculptures and so much more. It also is an amazing opportunity to get out and experience local artists and food. The festival features local food vendors and food trucks, along with homemade ice cream. Luckily this year it was perfect weather and with my two friends Abby and Krissy, we fully enjoyed the arts festival to its fullest.
